Description

This view, taken from Edward Delaval’s riverside house in London, looks south-west across the river to Lambeth Palace. Delaval’s wife, Sarah Scott, and his daughter, Sarah Hussey Delaval, are depicted in the left foreground. Sarah Hussey Delaval, whose mother touches her arm affectionately, was by this time the wife of James Gunman, whom she had married in 1805 at nearby St Margaret’s, Westminster. The picture was exhibited by George Arnald at the Royal Academy in 1813 with its pendant (DN78) as View of Lambeth, from the Top of a Gentleman’s House on the Side of the Thames (241). Edward Delaval’s daughter, seated, is dressed and posed in a similar fashion to her portrait by Thomas Lawrence (DN43). For a portrait of Sarah Scott by George Francis Joseph, wearing a dress identical to the one in the present picture, see DN90. In the late nineteenth century both views hung in the Library (formerly the Green Parlour) on the ground floor at Doddington Hall. Exhibited: Royal Academy 1813 (241).
