Description

Although the inscription states that the painting is of Ford Castle, Northumberland, a former seat of the Delaval family, it is in fact a depiction of Doddington Hall, and presumably dates from sometime in the mid-eighteenth century. The artist is unknown, but they may have been a member of the Delaval family or a local artist. As noted under DN80, Edward Delaval, together with an unnamed brother, painted pendant views of Seaton Delaval – although these would have post-dated the present picture, which appears to have been made in the earlier eighteenth century.
