Lady Elizabeth Pelham (c.1664–1681) was the daughter of Sir William Jones of Ramsbury, Wiltshire, a lawyer and politician, and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Edward Alleyn of Hatfield Peverel, Essex. On 21 March 1680 she married Thomas, 1st Baron Pelham of Halland Place, Laughton, Sussex. This portrait is likely to have been painted in 1679–80 to commemorate Elizabeth’s betrothal or marriage. Sadly, the marriage was brief: she died and was buried at Laughton on 13 October 1681, having given birth to two daughters. The younger daughter, Elizabeth, married Charles, 2nd Viscount Townshend in 1698. Thomas Pelham’s children by his subsequent marriage to Grace Holles included Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Newcastle-under-Lyme, and Henry Pelham, chancellor and prime minister.
