Description

The subject of the portrait has been identified traditionally as Prince Rupert of the Rhine (1619–1682), the son of Frederick V, Elector Palatine, and Elizabeth Stuart. A facial comparison with the portrait of Prince Rupert in Banbury Town Hall, attributed to Mytens, reveals some similarities. Otherwise, the comparison to other portraits of Prince Rupert is not convincing. The painting can be dated to the mid-seventeenth century. It may depict a member of the Hussey family, quite possibly John Hussey Delaval (DN82) who espoused the Royalist cause during the Civil War.
