Description
Margaret Pitt was the daughter of Robert Pitt of Blandford Forum, Dorset.1 Little is known about Margaret Pitt, although she appears to have been the sister of the physician Robert Pitt (1653–1713), professor of anatomy at Oxford and fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. On 15 November 1700 Margaret Pitt married William Lowth at St Bride’s Church, Fleet Street, London. The portrait dates probably to sometime between 1710 and 1720. It may be a pendant to the portrait of her husband, William Lowth (DN49), although they do not appear to be by the same artist. In the late nineteenth century the portrait hung alongside that of William Lowth in the Library (formerly the Green Parlour) on the ground floor at Doddington.
