Description
The portrait depicts Martha Lowth, daughter of William Lowth (1660–1732). She married Robert Eden DD (1701–1759) (DN29) and was the mother of Mary Eden (DN59). Oliver Millar, who inspected the portrait in 1952, noted: ‘Martha Louth: obscurely signed and dated: bust to l. front in a painted oval; in yellow with blue cloak: typical and unimportant’.1 The signature and date mentioned by Millar are no longer visible to the naked eye.
