Piggy, a bay horse, was apparently the favourite hunter of George Eden Jarvis (DN74). The artist, John Wheeler (1821–1903), specialised in equestrian portraits and dogs. Wheeler was born in Gloucestershire, the son of a stone-cutter. Following his discharge from the Queen’s Dragoon Guards in 1847, Wheeler, who was apparently self-taught, took up sporting painting. Based in Bath and then in London, he gained patronage from prominent members of the aristocracy, including the Dukes of Beaufort, Portland, Westminster and Rutland, as well as the Earls of Roseberry and Caithness.
