Description

The clothing and wig worn by the sitter are characteristic of that worn by professional gentleman during the mid-eighteenth century, while the handling and appearance of the portrait suggest a date of about 1750 to 1760. Given its presence at Trewithen, it seems probable that the subject is a member of the extended Hawkins family, although to date it has not been possible to identify him or the artist responsible for the portrait.
