Description

The portrait is of Rhoda Delaval (1725–1757), eldest daughter of Captain Francis Blake Delaval and Rhoda Apreece. She is presented in the guise of a shepherdess, a popular costume of the period in ‘fancy’ portraiture and masquerades. On stylistic grounds, and based on the sitter’s age, the portrait dates probably from the mid- to late 1730s. An attribution to Arthur Pond is suggested.
