Description

The sitter in the present portrait is unidentified. However, comparison with several adult portraits of Rhoda Blake Delaval, notably DN65, a portrait attributed to Arthur Pond (fig.1), and James McArdell’s mezzotint after Rhoda Delaval’s unlocated self-portrait,1 suggests that it may be the same sitter, here aged around twelve years old. The identity of the artist is unknown but may have been working in the circle of Arthur Pond.

circa 1750. Oil on canvas, 76.8 × 68.6 cm. National Portrait Gallery, London (NPG 5253).
