Description

Rhoda Hussey (c.1671–1689) was one of four daughters of Thomas Hussey, second Baronet, of Honington, Lincolnshire and Sarah Langham, eldest daughter of Sir John Langham. She died unmarried, 4 May 1689, aged eighteen, and is buried in the Hussey family chapel at St Wilfred’s Church, Honington, Lincolnshire, where her memorial states that she was the eldest daughter. The present three-quarter-length portrait may have been painted shortly before her death. The identity of the portraitist is unknown, but the present work exhibits characteristics reminiscent of the Swedish-born artist, Michael Dahl (1659–1743), who was active in England from the 1680s onwards.
