Description
Sarah Delaval was born 14 March 1742, second daughter of Captain Francis Blake Delaval (d. 1752) and Rhoda Apreece. She married on 20 January 1760 John Savile, first Baron Pollington, created first Earl of Mexborough in 1766. The present portrait, in which the sitter would appear to be around eight years old, probably dates from around 1750. The portrait, which has a fine rococo frame, is reminiscent stylistically of the French émigré artist Philip Mercier (c.1689–1760).
