Description
The picture was commissioned presumably by Captain Christopher Gunman who commanded the Fifth Rate, Orange (formerly a captured Dutch vessel, Oranjeboom), from 17 March 1666 to 19 January 1667. Oliver Millar, who inspected the picture at Doddington in 1952, noted: ‘a weak picture of a yacht and other vessels, c.1670, very coarse, but quite [?well] in colour. Perhaps signed lor. to l of a piece of driftwood’.1
