Description

In the late nineteenth century Cole identified the sitter as Thomas Tailor (1561–1607), recorder to the bishop of Lincoln and builder of Doddington Hall. However, he would appear to be Tailor’s son and heir, Thomas Tailor II (1580–1652) by his second wife, Jane Hollingworth. On the death of Thomas Tailor II the Doddington estate passed to his niece, Elizabeth Anton (1591–1658), who married Sir Edward Hussey (1585–1648).

The portrait has been attributed traditionally to an artist named Jan van Rijn, otherwise unknown.
