Description
The portrait, set in a feigned oval, represents a young woman wearing a yellow dress over a white shift fastened with jewels, with a brown cloak over her left arm. The style of dress, introduced to British portraiture by Sir Peter Lely, was popular during the late seventeenth century and suggests a date of about 1680–90. The identity of the artist is unknown but is likely to have painted RN79, which may depict a sister, relative or close friend.
