Anne Hussey Delaval, Lady Stanhope, and Sir John Delaval in a Performance of 'The Fair Penitent' by Nicholas Rowe
attributed to Benjamin Wilson, ? 1767
Description
The portrait has been called Elizabeth Stuart (1596–1662), daughter of James I and Anne of Denmark, and wife of Frederick V, Elector Palatine. Elizabeth was Electress Palatine and Queen of Bohemia (known also as the ‘Winter Queen’ owing to her husband’s brief reign as King of Bohemia from the winter of 1619 to the following November). However, the sitter in the present portrait bears only a passing resemblance to other portraits of Elizabeth Stuart suggesting that the traditional identification is incorrect. The date on the panel, 1617, is the same as on the so-called portrait of Anna Maria of Spain (DN6), suggesting that they are in some way related.
