Description

The subject of the portrait has been identified in the past as Mary Stuart (1542–1587), also known as Mary Queen of Scots, daughter of James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise, and mother of James VI and I. However, based on comparisons with other portraits of the subject at a similar age, for example the miniature by Nicholas Hilliard of c.1578 in the Royal Collection Trust,1 the traditional identification would appear to be highly speculative. Cole suggested that the portrait was ‘by or after Clouet’, presumably because François Clouet (c.1520–1572) painted the portrait of Mary Queen of Scots in the Royal Collection Trust.2
