Description

The subject of the present portrait has been identified traditionally as Susanna Ellison (1752–1826), daughter of Richard Ellison of Thorne, Yorkshire. In 1777 she married Humphrey Waldo Sibthorp (1744–1815). However, the woman in the drawing appears to be younger than forty-nine, the age Susanna Ellison would have been in 1801. The subject has a passing resemblance to Susanna Sibthorp’s daughter, Mary Esther Sibthorp (1778–1861), the subject of TN45, also by Edridge. However, the present subject does not appear to be Mary Esther Sibthorp. Nor could it be a sister, as she seems to have had only male siblings.
