Description
The traditional identification of the sitter as James Gunman (1696–1757) does not appear convincing, given that he was a naval officer. Rather, the portrait appears to represent a scholar in his mid- to late teens, painted at some point in the seventeenth century, but possibly evoking an even earlier age. The gown and the embroidered shirt suggest some sort of courtly or institutional affiliation.
