group of women on the left and determine his judgement as to the picture being a very fine specimen of this rare master.

Unknown – Under it – The Madona lifting up a gauze covering the Infant Jesus who lies fast asleep before her on a cushion. Two cherubs with flowers on one side. The modest beauty of the virgin, the graceful attitude, the nice assemblage of colours in the drapery may at first occupy the attention, but soon as the eye catches the child there it remains riveted, the perfect simmetry of the limbs, the easy turn of the head, the smile, the astonishing loveliness of the countenance, and with all a look of divinity which surpass all idea. (The author of this inestimable production is much disputed, some say Raphael – some say his master Fra Bartolomeo di San Mareo  - some Pierino delVago. Whoever it may be the picture is certainly capital).

Titian – Over door – A portrait of a woman lying naked with a dog at her feet, her elbow – resting on a cushion which her hand holds one of her breasts. She is rather large, but of the most elegant make whilst the painter has exercised his talent in so superior a manner, the figure appears seems a perfect deception, appearing to start almost from the canvass. The colouring

is divine, and the carnation tints finely expressed, you absolutely see the blood resuming through the veins of the neck. The beauty of the face does not equal that of the body, perhaps the look partakes more of boldness than may meet approbation. The back ground consists of an open court with columns through which the country is seen and must pass for a wonderful fine piece of architecture.

Victor – Right – a scene in a street of a village where a mountebank is drawing a tooth from a man who sits under his hands, clenching his fist in sign of extreme pain – several figures are looking on, amongst others a pretty young Damsel lays her hand to her check emblematical that she is waiting to

undergo the same operation. The others are in proper attitudes of anxiety or curiousty – an umbrella is raised on a pole which throws a pleasant effect of shadow on a table whereon a carpet is laid with instruments teeth &c. – This picture is well coloured drawn with accuracy and the dresses becoming. Tis highly finished and thought one of the best of the master.

Victor – Left – Representation of a butcher with his attendants preparing to cut up a side of pork, in the mean time, a good wife brings him a glass of beer which he is going to drink whilst he holds his cleaver in readiness for the intended work – a boy stands near the meat in the action of drawing his knife, another sits on a barrel blowing a bladder with a little companion smiling on him – on the left in shadow is a woman bargaining with a man who is showing her different joints of meat in a tub. This picture though not equal to the

foregoing in point of subject, is rather superior in colouring and characters which are full of nature and good expression. The boys are excellently touched and not ungraceful. The scene finishes with a view of houses and a church at a distance – ’tis a companion to the foregoing and painted also in the finest stile of the master.

Rottenhammer, Vevet Brueghel – Underneath center – a matchless picture representing Christ on the Virgin’s lap to whom St. John kneeling is offering fruit, St. Ann behind with sword. Angels and Cherubs – figures [Rottenhamer] Landscape and beautiful wreath of flowers [Brueghel]

John Baptista Franks – Right – a meeting of Connoisseurs assembled in the gallery of a virtuoso where there is a large collection of pictures imitating the works of the most eminent masters among which are the Venus and Satyr of Correggio, the portrait of Aldobranchi and his Secretary by Raphael – others of Titian – P. Veronese – Rubens – Vandyke – 

Dipenbeck – P. Brill – Breughell &c. – they are too numerous and minute to describe with the exactness they deserve. The painter has also represented Bronzes, casts – coins – Medallions, globes, and even prints – one of which is the judgement of paris by Marc Antonio and is imitated with a neatness and accuracy that is astonishing in the compass of two inches – In the center of the piece is a second apartment hung with pictures shown through an arch – wherein the artist satirizes some particular characters of the times under the grotesque appearance of human figures with the heads of Asses and hatchets in their hands who are furiously chopping and destroying the works of genius. Amidst this extraordinary variety of objects there seems no confusion – the different figures who are admiring the rarities being boldly relieved and animated separates them from the other parts, and in every other respect the artist has acquitted himself in this very

very difficult and laborious task so as to have proved himself the most eminent of all his contemporaries in this manner of painting.

Jn^o Baptista Franks – Left – a visit of Connoisseurs to a painter or virtuoso in his gallery, where there is a collection of pictures and other rarities. Here the artist has not shewn so many imitations as in the foregoing nor are they painted so very accurately or with so pointed a pencil, but by his judgement in this particular, the general effect is more reposed – the perspective is better preserved, the space is full without confusion, rich without a glaze, and a harmony reigns throughout – on the left is the portrait of Franks attending some of the characters or remarkable patrons of genius in these days – on the right are three other figures, one of them in dress of a Magistrate – the others richly habited seem persons of

consideration, as there is a strong expression of deference and respect in the countenance of those employed in showing them the rarities – Tis to be lamented that at so great a distance of time one cannot ascertain the particular portraits the painter has here introduced as it may be presumed from the wonderful finishing which is more like enamel than oil colours, from the variety of tints in the carnation, and from the strong and natural characters, that the resemblance must be striking. – This picture is painted in the parts that would admit it with a very spirited large pencil and must be reckoned a very capital piece of the master.

Verkolie – On each side – a picture – the one on the left represents a Dutch Boor who endeavours in vain to kiss a young woman carrying milk. – In the other the same person has evidently accused the Boor of the attempt before his wife.

He in a cage denies it and is going to strike her, whilst the girl holding up his hat with one hand approaches a small looking glass with the other, seeming to use the vulgar saying look yourself in the face and deny it if you dare.

Reubens fruits by Snyders – Over door – In this picture the painter has introduced the portrait of his son seated on a table, whereon is laid a large basket of grapes and other fruit, and just as the younker is laying hands on the prey the housekeeper comes in and gently prevents him in his pillage which he will not easily relinquish as he shews marks of displeasure at the interruption – Many painters have attempted figures in the midst of flowers and fruit but without success – it was reserved only for the pencil of the great Rubens to preserve his carnation tints amongst the lushe of ripe grapes, peaches, &c. This boy is so beautiful, the expression of features so fine and interesting, and the carnation tints so blooming, warm and clear that the eye fixes on this object as the principal, without being 

disturbed by the brightness of the others, though they are strong imitations of the richest productions of nature. –The woman is in profile – her cast of features are pleasant the hands and arms well drawn – and colouring remarkably clear – a handkerchief hangs negligently on her neck, shewing as much of her bosom as discovers an elegant shape. – The drapery is agreeable and has just brightness enough to keep up the general harmony. – The manner of pencilling is flowing, bold, yet delicate and mark it visibly to be painted in the best time of this celebrated master.

D. Teniers – Opposite chimney – a Landscape with farm house seen on the left of the foreground, where a group of figures are drinking and conversing – a river runs to the right of the piece, the borders of which are beautiful risings and broken

broken ground interspersed with cottages – a village with a spire and a bluish distances closes the scene. – The general effect of this picture is striking, the figures are natural and strongly relieved – the gleam of sun playing through the clouds and enlivening the hills produces a pleasing efft, full of harmony and rich colouring – ’tis painted very masterly with a large and bold pencil.

Ismen Vecchio – Left – a Sea Port – on the left is a great arch way, a road leads through it to a city where many figures are travelling – Ships are sailing towards it, and in the distance a range of hills – ’Tis boldly painted and the arch way in shadow gives relief to the other parts of the subject.

Ismen Vecchio – Right – A Landscape – on the right is a lofty hill from whence a waterfall pours down rapidly – on the left is a road covered with large groupes of cattle and figures, and leads to a bridge – the view closes with a rich extensive distance.

Ramsay – Underneath – His present Majesty George the Third – it is the original picture painted at the accession for the purpose of making a drawing for the coin [this work is also listed in the Old Dining Room]

Vandevelde – Left – a Sea fight. Right – another sea fight by the same master  This picture is a representation of the famous battle of Sole bay between the English and Dutch fleets. The English are drawn up on the left and have the weather gage – the Dutch are on the right of the picture and are to leeward. The capital ships on each side are towards the front of the piece and the line of battle diminishes to the distance, the fire of the English seems superior and the confusion in the Enemy’s fleet increasing – four of their capital ships are in flames, the admiral and one 

other in their line of battle, one in the rear, and the fourth has by some means got to windward of the English fleet and is there burning, she is at a distance but appears a capital ship. Close to the front are masts, rigging and other ruin of sinking ships of the enemy crowded with seamen. The Dutch fleet on the right side of the picture are beginning to fly whilst victory has declared for the English – the latter have no ships on fire or in confusion, but the sails &c are much wounded. Near the admirals to the left is a tender or sloop seeming to prepare to carry the news of the victory. This picture is a fine masterpiece of art – it shows as much of the battle and is as intelligible as the nature of painting would admit. It is worked with a free and spirited pencil – the sails, flags, and pennents are fluttering in the wind and have a looseness and air distinguishable only in the works of Vandevelde. – The light coloured smoke

of the cannonade and the black smoke of the ships on fire are admirably described and appear (if reflected in a glass) real objects – the water clouds &c. are such as are adapted to the subject. – This picture cost Mr Horton £500 and Lord Anson thought it so valuable a description of a great victory that he paid Mr. Scott an hundred guineas for a copy of it. It is to be remarked that this picture was painted for the Duke of York and he refused taking it from Vandevelde because he had placed Lord Sandwich’s ship in the front and in the post of honor, and put his highness in the rear.

lies very thinly on it – and nearer a flat where there are some pine trees. The season this picture is intended to represent is about the middle of November – the clouds are cold and expressive of the time – the impetuous rushing of water with the frothing in some parts – the smooth gliding in sheets in others is admirably touched and not to be equalled by any other master – the composition is ground and suitable to the subject and a harmony of colours reigns throughout.

Old Stone after Vandevelde – Over chimney – this picture is well known by the print engraved by Strange after the original of which this is a very good copy and painted under the direction of Van Dyck – the subject is a very good copy and painted under the direction of Van Dyke – the subject is the three Children of King Charles the first – they are in the most natural and easy attitudes but the Prince of Wales seems most graceful – the colours of the draperies are such as set off the carnation and the folds are loose and correspondent to the shapes of the children – In the composition of this picture one cannot but remark a defect, which is that of a little dog in each corner of the foreground in colour and attitudes too similar and in places exactly opposite, but this may be supposed a compliance of to [Bute] Vandyke to directions he received.

seems to complain of his want of generosity and looks on the piece of money he has given as a scanty recompense for his entertainment whilst the old gentleman puts his hand in his pocket and seems restrained by his avarice from giving more – the expression of these figures is admirable. In the distance are three other figures near a window from whence the piece is illuminated and a most wonderful effect is given by a curtain artfully hiding or crossing the strong light (It is painted with a free light behind, the perspective of the apartment and pavement truly observed it must be though as strong a representation of nature as can be seen of the Dutch School and capital of the master. It was in the collection of Bramcamps.)

Jan Steen – Opposite center above –  A Cock Fight – this master has thought fit to introduce himself in the character of a cobbler sitting against a tree, cap on his head his arms across and his leg most naturally extended, the laugh so admirably expressed, no one views it without the same inclination. This laugh is directed against the old sly winner who holds out his hand with much eagerness demanding a payment he cannot probably obtain, for the anxiety of his antagonist to get at him who is kept back by the woman testifies no such intent. The winning and losing cocks are even finely expressed. The boy upon his knees holding the latter with the back of his head turned on which is a red woollen cap with a hole in it is nature itself. The other in blue stooping down appearing to take a deep concern in the bleeding

cock is most elegantly as well as finely done – the stupid indifference of the boy standing against the tree forms a good contrast. Jan Steen never composed or painted a better picture.

clear and throughout there is a fine glow of colouring and harmony – Tis thought the best marine ever painted by this master.

Vanderhyde figures by Old Mieris – Center underneath – View of a place in Antwerp – bordered by a Cathedral many figures. The azure sky, the light airy playful clouds, the exactness and finishing of the buildings, the figures kneeling to the host carrying along – the truth of the others and of the animals, all attract the eye – The deception is so strong one sometimes inclines to believe it is reality and we are beholding the true scene through a camera obscura. (fine fine picture).

Domenico Van Tol – Left – A Lady very handsome and richly dressed playing at cards with a cavalier who pays her great attention, Servant pouring out a glass of wine. The countenance, the drapery, the carpet, highly finished.

Reufinck – Right – Lady at her Toilet – so finished you may count the beads of her bracelet, decide the pattern of her fan, the goodness of the japan, and provenance of what country china the cup placed on a box near the spinning wheel.

Gaspar Poussin – Right – A Landscape (the general tone of colouring of this picture is brown but there is a remarkable transparence and richness in it. On the left is a large bank of broken ground with branches of trees springing out, and under them two figures leaning on a Rock in conversation, a third is lying 

own near them – further on is a large flock of sheep on a road which branches into three and leads to a large Castle with battlements and square tower, and blue hills behind. A small tree grows near the road on the right in the center of the foreground is a pool of water)  copy all [Bute]

Terburgh – Next uppermost – Portrait of a Burgo-master in his study dressed in black, a table and chair covered with crimson velvet fringed with gold; every article highly finished

Young Mieris – Under – portrait of a man laying on the ground clothed in a tygers skin, a woman feeding him with red grapes. The high finishing is wonderful, you perceive it throughout – in the Landscape the foliage, the ornamental ewer hung on a branch of a tree, the cup on the ground, the boys, the Tyger’s skin – the dress of the female – the figures themselves, yet 

on contemplating a mere Dutch Boor and Dutch Vrow – one is a loss to discover the youthful Bacchus and beautiful Ariadne whom the painter meant to represent.

Terburg – Opposite uppermost – The portrait of the Burgomaster’s wife dressed in black with a rich petticoat of white sattin and gold with a chain and table also covered with crimson velvet and gold fringe. The painter has amused himself with making it perceptible that neither velvet or fringe were new.

Vanhuysum – Under – Island of Cythera with Nymphs and flowers.

Le Nain – Over Chimney – a cobler at the gate of a town, a young woman giving him a shoe to mend – various other figures in their different occupations – The woman is beautiful and at the same time elegant. The boy near the woman perfect – the simplicity of the cobler admirable: but nothing can exceed the figure lying down asleep.

Teniers – Right uppermost – small Landscape, cattle, shepherd reposing himself.

Berghem – Under – Landscape on the right is a large dark rocky hill rising to the top of the picture – a road leads through an arch way cut in the rock on the left is a large sheet of shallow water through which peasants are driving cows, laden horses and sheep travelling from left to right

right – further on at the finishing of the water is a small broken hill intermixed by bushes, and in the distance other hills. The clouds are light and moving and a cleaness of colouring throughout the picture as well as the spirited pencil for which this master was so eminent must be observed in every part of this performance.

Roland Savery – Under – thick wood with water. A man hiding himself behind a tree to shoot wild fowl which are distinctly seen with the colour of their feathers and various flowers near the water.

Breughel figures by Rottenhamer – Under – A most high finished picture enriched with historical figures and in excellent taste. Diana and her nymphs seen by Action – the figures finely coloured and full of grace (this picture may be esteemed a jewel).

Teniers – Left uppermost – Landscape with figures and cattle – shepherd playing on pipe.

Berghem – Under – Landscape – not less excellent as to cleaness and colouring and pencilling than the latter picture of this master but the composition is not altogether so rich. – On the right is a dark mass of foreground running sloping to the left and large trees growing on it, the shades of which though varied are yet not so airy and pleasant as usual with this master – the foreground is well enriched with cattle and figures on the left, and the distance is a hilly scene to the right.

G. Van Ekhout – Next over door – a composition of several figures representing a corps of officers with their visitors in a guard room – the principal person sits in the front or middle of the picture and takes a graceful woman by the hand, who

had just arrived, behind is a Drummer bringing him his sword and cross bells. In the second groupe are several officers at cards, or otherwise amusing themselves. On the right in the foreground is a young lad playing with a dog. It is manifest in this performance that the artist has imitated Terburgh, and he has so well succeeded in the general tone and cleanness of colouring, the richness and finishing of the drapery, as well as in the freedom of pencilling and air of the figures, that it has often deceived very able Connoisseurs. (this picture formerly belonged to Monsieur Aved of Paris.)

Slingeland – Under – Cook maid in her kitchen surrounded by garden stuff – a lanthorn on the table, bird cages hanging from the ceiling – is pouring water out of a picture into a bason of curious shape, a candle on one side and other articles. The light proceeding from a window darts on the figure and discovers her beautiful

shaped face, her fine eyes, fine forehead and pretty light coloured hair.

Karel du Jardin – Opposite uppermost – a Landscape, man crossing water quite limpid leading a mule laden and taking notice of a dog jumping near him a cow at a distance in back ground ruins and mountains (all finely told.) copy all [Bute]

Ostade – Under – Lawyer in his cabinet reading – the whole figure admirable, papers, table, covering, light thrown from a window – books in background.

Eglon van der Neer – Next uppermost – Lady richly dressed in black velvet and fure, white sattin petticoat with a silver plate in her lap, bread in it – table before her covered

with a carpet, partly removed to make room for a mug and a glass half full of liquor lignor [Bute]. The maid attends holding a silver bason and ewer, near whom is a parrot coming out of his cage – the Lady inviting him by holding out a piece of bread – The Lady has an handsome face, her hair curiously arranged. She sits on a chair, covered with red cloth of which the binding and brass nails are discernable, and by examining in their turn each part the surprising finishing of the whole becomes more striking.

Gerard Dou – Center compartment – uppermost – This picture is a representation of an old man in his kitchen giving directions to an old woman. He is sitting by the fire which is in the left, wrapped up in a fur gown and a little dog by him, his left hand stretched out and his head turned towards the dame – by the intentness of the conversation it should seem as if it referred to some particular history; on the right near an old woman is a table covered with a carpet two books on it and a lanthorn – a chair near it with a cushion – and a goat stands between the table and the woman and a spinning wheel on the other side of her. In the centre of the picture is a winding stair case and near the top of it a servant maid coming down. The head of the man and woman as well as the hands are excellently drawn and coloured, the drapery loose and flowing and of colours properly adapted to set off

There is a grandeur of character in the man, and the woman though a familiar one has nothing mean in it – the light comes from a window at the top of the picture on the left – the right of the picture behind the woman is dark by the projection of the stair case by this contrivance the light and shadow give a wonderful effect and is withal very natural, the pavement background, carpet and utensils are all finished with great care yet it is worked with a flowing bold pencil which produces the same effect as the highest finished pieces of this master.

Paul Brill – Under – Landscape with a thick wood and cattle

Ostade – Right – man playing at Drafts – one smoaking – the anxiety of the one in the

red cap standing up, and sly coolness of the other are striking – the light comes finely from the window.

Ostade – Left – Schoolmaster with boys. The boy with his back turned in a red jacket and a leather strap around his waist and whose round head and hair seem actually alive, is evidently in a great fright, labouring at spelling, the other whose face is seen is no less so, the master peremptorily pointing with a pen argues the lad to be a dunce. The masters countenance is severe, and he leans with one hand on the arm of a chair with all the dignity of Pedagogue power – on the table you distinguish the pen knife and pens. The light here also proceeds from a window.

Old Miers – Under – centre – a mother has discovered her daughter with a love letter, whom

she threatens holding her finger up in a menacing posture. The girl is in tears applying her handkerchief to one side of her face. She is beautiful and appears more so from the horrid angry countenance of the old woman – her arms are also fine and graceful – the fatal letter seen on the table inscribed a la bella Volutta – a red rose lays near it absolutely a deception and some scattered leaves – also pearl earings – the tortoise shell box so exactly painted marks the hiding place of the letter.

Gerard Dou – Underneath – center – An Old man meditating in his study – two books lie on his table which is covered with a carpet – the whole exquisitely finished and painted in a fine taste – the light comes from a window on the left and makes produces [Bute] a great effect.

Behind on a low shelf are drinking glasses, and over a press is seen a globe and bits of china, over these a picture representing a tower on fire – on one side a casement window, bottom part open – through which trees are perceived, throwing a fine light upon the object – In the background another casement window reflecting sufficient light from an azure sky to allow you to see that there is a kitchen where the cook maid is hanging a pot on the fire, a boy behind

her who appears going out – all highly finished.

Ary de Vos – Under – a young man richly clad playing on a violin, a dog laying by him, cushion on which he sits red velvet and gold tassels – behind a table covered, music books on it – finished in a high stile.

Guido – Venus and Cupid – Venus is represented as sitting in an upright posture upon a couch of antique structure covered with cushions; Those that give a relief to her left arm and leg are of a deep shaded crimson, and her foot is leaning lightly on one of the same colour; her body is turned to the right, and the Painter has just caught the moment when the Goddess has quite disarmed the urchin, as she is holding his arrow in her left hand, and the bow in her right which she elevates quite out of his reach and where on he fixes his eyes with some tokens of impatience, whilst the mother seems to enjoy a secret pleasure; visible in the archness of her features mixt with grace and sweetness, and is willing to proceed and see the effect that a

little teasing may produce on her beloved wanton Boy, in which she is likely to be gratified; for he is almost wrought into anger; and (she should know), his frown is dreaded even by the Gods themselves. – the piece is illuminated from above, the Goddess’s right arm throws a tender shade on her forehead; which gives a roundness to the head, and her left and shoulder partake of the same beautiful tone. The arrow and crossing drapery give force and affect to the carnation of the body which exhibits the most correct outline and gradations of tints that might vie with Corregio for sweetness. The Cupid is drawn in a warm shade reflected by the background, and though naked like his mother, is quite a contrast to the splendour appropriate to the

Queen of Love. He rests his knee upon a cushion covered with linen, the whiteness whereof is broke by a Rose coloured drapery that gives relief to the beautiful right leg of the goddess. A large casket approves a bold mass to this part of the picture, and the comb and string of pearls at top intimate the furniture within; and that Vulcan has not left his Cara Sposa want toys or trinkets adapted wither to use or ornament.
This picture is painted in the best time of the master and being a subject suited to his genius, there was full scope to displaying the excellencies to so peculiar to Guido. No other pencil could exhibit the archness, animation, sweetness and gaity that reign in the features, with the inimitable grace, elegance

and majesty which so happily unite in describing the Queen of beauty. The frown gathering on the brow of the cupid and his whole figure are also admirable; The drapery is finely cast and richly coloured and gives lustre and harmony to this enchanting composition.

The Holy Family by Schidoni –

The Virgin sits on the left side of the Picture bending forward towards her Son – contemplating him with inexpressible admiration, her right arm is thrown gracefully round his body in ye tenderest & most affectionate manner as raising him up from a Pedestal, the child eagerly advances to meet her, he seems to bound, and the deception is so great, You think you hear him speak, with one arm he embraces his Mother, the other is lifted up above her head in a playful angelic attitude. Love, innocence, Beauty, & sprightliness are of Graces which adorn them in this part of the Composition, more like intellectual – than earthly Beings. Underneath is represented St John, resting on an arm over the Virgins knee, and with the other holding the Lamb, an Emblematical – protype of the Agnus Dei, which was to be more fully explained to him herafter this with Joseph in back ground are the finest contrasts possible, to ye Sprightly con Amore in ye Center of the Painting.
       The Grand Gusto, the varied actions – attitudes in this Picture, are as perfectly unique as any Composition which has appear’d in the 15th Century, when the Arts were at their highest pitch of Glory. – Schidori learn’d the most correct Design in ye School of the Carracci – and was the only Painter in Italy who succeeded in the Grace & Colouring of Corregio – to which he devoted his whole life, & this Picture is a rare Specimen of his Works_x – at this time so exceedingly scarce and valuable. –

 ^XIf it is his Works the only reason the writer has to think so is,  because to him it appears much better Drawn – than any Picture he ever saw, by that Great Master Corregio – otherwise should have thought it it his

a Description of a Picture by Domenico Feti of the Virgin & Child, with an angel gather Fruit for Them.

In the Center a most beautiful Landscape perhaps not inferior to Claude, the virgin is sitting under a Cherry Tree caressing an Infant and gracefully looking up towards an Angel; who seems employ’d in gathering the Fruit. – the Child, conscious of the Angels – intention, Springs forward with inconceivable Spirit & animation, as if flying from his mothers arms – this enlivened action of innocence, which is painted with all the force & Magick of Colours is remarkably striking, & forms the finest possible contrast with ye serene composition of the Angel, wou’d do honor to the Pencil of Corregio – the whole subject is finely conceived and equal to what the Poets of the best eras of Greek & Roman literature – have imagined. The Composition is in the beautiful form of the Pyramid & only equal’d by the general harmony of ye Colouring & the Stillness of Effect.
